The Unbearable Boredom of the Debates

The Presidential Debate Series is, contrary to Mitt Romney, much more interminable than Law & Order. This is my proposal to make the debates more useful and far more interesting than a series of 1 min soundbites that accomplish absolutely nothing.

So I propose to make the debates into an NCAA tournament with brackets of a series of 1-on-1 debates. This would allow for real debates of substance and challenges of mettle and grace under pressure. It would give opportunity for Vegas bookies to make money, office pools would abound, thereby enhancing the public's interest in the goings-on. Various organizations could sponsor the events. We could get special guest moderators (bring back Bill Clinton, Newt Gingrich, Bob Dole, Al Gore for cameo appearances as moderators on themes of their interest). It would transform the boring into a sporting extravaganza!

Way ahead of you, doc. With a better-looking bracket. Although I like your blog template. ;)

You're on the right track. Debates should be one-on-one.

Match ups could be by a ranking system and the ranking could be voted on by precinct chairs in the party. This would give some purpose to the party in all this since our primary system has mucked that up.

The candidates would debate candidates near them in ranking. A lower tier candidate would have to rise in the rankings to debate a first tier candidate.

After each round the votes of the chairs would be tallied and anyone not getting a certain percent (10, 5? should be low) of support would not be invited to the next round of debate.

Of course, candidates can debate whomever they choose anytime they can get someone to agree to debate them.
